Australia, like the rest of the world, is currently battling the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. As of April 7, there are already 5,895 confirmed cases in the country, including 2,432 recoveries and 45 deaths. According to the latest Department of Health coronavirus data, New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland have the most number of cases among the states and territories.
The whole country is on ACTIVE Alert status and yet the virus is still spreading rapidly every day. But there are things we can do to stop the increase of affected individuals. Our aim as a nation is to flatten the curve and it can only be done if each of us will help. Here are the steps you can take to protect yourself and slow the spread of COVID-19.
1. Wash your hands correctly
Washing your hands with soap and water is the crucial first step in preventing the virus from spreading. For good measure, rub your hands with 70% alcohol solution to kill the viruses for sure. Do these regularly, especially right after buying supplies or going outside for whatever reasons.
2. Wear a mask
COVID-19 is a type of coronavirus that targets the respiratory tract and will, therefore, be transmitted through respiratory droplets. When an infected person sneezes or coughs, the droplets carrying the virus will become airborne and can be inhaled by anyone nearby.
That’s why wearing a mask is a must every time you’re going out. It will prevent the airborne virus from entering your nose and mouth, even if someone suddenly sneezes in front of you. Wearing a mask will also protect others in case you, yourself, suddenly coughs or sneezes.
3. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose
Aside from directly inhaling the virus, you can also be infected by COVID-19 when you touch your eyes, mouth, and nose your unwashed hands. So, avoid touching any parts of your face altogether to prevent infection. Avoid touching any objects outside your home as well if you can help it, but if you can’t, make sure to always wash your hands immediately.
4. Know the early symptoms
You should also know the symptoms of coronavirus, so you can act immediately when they appear. When the virus inhabits a person, it will take 2 to 14 days for it to incubate inside the body. This means that symptoms are expected to show within two weeks.
The early symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Once you notice these, visit your doctor right away and get tested. Quarantine yourself and avoid going near family members. You’ll know that your condition worsened when you experience trouble in breathing, persistent pain in the chest, and bluish lips or face. These are the emergency warning signs that you need medical attention immediately.
5. Practice Social Distancing
You can do your part to slow the spread of COVID-19 by practicing social distancing. As mentioned, it takes up to two weeks for the coronavirus to incubate inside the body. Any person can already be infected even if the symptoms haven’t appeared yet, even you. To prevent the virus from transferring from person to person even further you need to practice social distancing and avoid places with crowds. If you need to go to places with many people, make sure to maintain at least 1 metre of distance between you and other persons.
6. Stay at home
The best way of practicing social distancing is by staying home with your family except for necessary things like buying food and supplies, getting medical help, going to work or school, and doing some exercise. If every Aussie will stay home, then we can prevent the virus from transferring and stop the number of confirmed coronavirus cases from increasing.
The federal government is doing it’s best in preventing infected people from entering Australia. It’s our job now to help stop community transmission of the virus and we can do it by staying at home until the virus stops spreading and dies on its own.
If every Australian citizen and resident will do all these steps, then we may finally see the end of this terrible situation we are in and stop the spread of this global pandemic.
