Over the years, many misconceptions have developed about what really causes acne and how you should correctly treat it. To keep you away from non-professional advice on dealing with acne, check out these popular myths about acne and learn how to best treat it.

Myth #1. Only Teens Experience Acne

This myth arose from the fact that almost 80% experience a certain acne condition starting from their teenage years up to their late 20s. While it is true that acne problems occur during adolescence in the majority of people, this does not mean that only teens suffer from it. All people can get acne despite their age, race, and gender. People may sometimes outgrow acne problems, however, not everyone will have the same experience as they reach adulthood.

Studies prove that 55% of the adult population struggle with acne even beyond their 30s. The cause of adult acne can include hormonal changes, medication effects, or simply products that affect the skin.

Myth #2. Dirty Skin is the Root Cause of Acne

The acne build-up is biologically triggered underneath your skin, not on the exterior. Unclean skin, dirt, and poor sanitary conditions are generally not the root cause of acne. Excessively washing your face can get the skin irritated and instead aggravate an acne condition.

Washing of your face can help prevent the buildup of dirt, oil, and dead skin but can not cure acne. Normally, it is recommended to wash your face twice a day only. Overdoing it may wash off your skin’s naturally produced oil which may potentially lead to more harm rather than helping you get rid of acne.

Likewise, forcefully scrubbing your face, using strident scrubs and overusing exfoliating products with skin-irritating ingredients can make your acne worse. To know which product is advisable for your skin, consult a dermatologist before any use or treatment.

Myth #3. Popping a Pimple is OK

Contrary to this belief, popping your pimple will never do you any good. When you squeeze your pimples, the unaffected areas of the skin might be affected by the further spread of bacterial infection triggering more inflammation. For you not to be tempted to pop your pimple, you better cover it with a hydrocolloid bandage.

Never hamper the normal process of your skin’s healing, it might result in skin discolouration, acne scars, or even permanent skin damage. It is still best to let your pimple heal normally.

Also read: Acne treatment – what to get at a chemist

Myth #4. The Sun and Other Tanning Procedures Clear Up Acne

Moderate UV exposure can be good, but too much is dangerous for your skin. You can apply sunscreen as protection from drying your skin too much. When your skin is dry and damaged due to excessive UV exposure, it’s forced to produce more oil. This makes the skin irritated and brings about inflammation, resulting in more acne. With or without acne, the sun’s UV radiation causes skin damage such as sunburn, or even skin cancer. While a tanned colour temporarily conceals acne, it does not help heal it.

Some sunscreens even have zinc oxide which is an anti-acne agent. Depending on your skin type, it is necessary to do as much research as you can and with the help of professional dermatologists, you may try several products and determine the best for your skin.

Myth #5. Toothpaste is a Home Remedy for Pimples

Toothpaste is for your teeth, not your skin. Never believe that toothpaste is a safe home cure for acne. What toothpaste does to your pimple is only to dry it out but does not clear and prevent it from occurring. Toothpaste fluorides can even potentially worsen your acne problems.

The harsh ingredients in toothpaste when applied to a pimple can result in skin allergies like contact dermatitis. To avoid this, better treat acne with spot medications that contain anti-acne ingredients like salicylic acid and topical retinoids. Remember, your toothpaste is harmful to your sensitive skin.

Myth #6. Pores can Open and Close

Contrary to popular belief, pores can not be steamed open. The truth is, pores don’t even have muscles that enable opening or closing it. Having acne is an indication of having large pores. If the pores are large, a tendency is that larger oil glands overproduce skin oil which results in an acne breakout.

Fortunately, steaming can help your skin loosen the oil build-up and any underlying debris which can make your pores appear smaller and produce just enough oil. This way a breakout can be controlled.

Myth #7. Fatty foods cause acne

Although acne is closely related to people who have oily skin, studies suggest that eating greasy foods like french fries, cheeseburgers, and pizzas do not affect your skin. Scientific evidence failed to prove that oily foods along with chocolates and even junk foods are the culprits of acne outbreaks.

What research indicates is the direct link between dairy consumption and a higher risk of irritating acne. So if you want your skin to be blemish free, consume less of those milk products and more dietary fibres such as fruits and vegetables.

Myth #8. Acne only develops in oily skin

Oily skin is not singled out as the only skin type where acne develops. Even dry skin types are prone to bacterial growth that causes acne. Thus, blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples are not dependent on the type of skin. Acne treatment in various skin types is a big challenge.

One has to make sure not to let the skin get even drier or irritated. Whether your skin is oily or dry or a combination of the two, you shouldn’t use skin products that contain benzoyl peroxide as it dries out your skin further. Instead, search for products that have salicylic acid on them. Additionally, make sure to use the product in moderation and strictly follow an expert’s advice about acne treatment.

Although moisturisers, especially the heavy ones, have components that are irritating to your acne-prone skin, it doesn’t mean that you must not moisturise it. Dry skin is highly vulnerable to irritation which leads to an increase in breakouts.

To be sure that your skin is properly moisturised and won’t contribute to skin irritation, use oil-free moisturisers. Also, avoid using moisturising products with added fragrance, cocoa butter, or mineral oil ingredients as they may add oiliness or irritating sensation to your skin and trigger a breakout.

Myth #9. Makeup causes acne

Hormones, overproduction of oil, and bacterial inflammation is the root cause of acne. Incompatible ingredients in makeup only worsen skin irritations if breakouts are already predisposed. These ingredients might further obstruct skin pores and lead to more inflammation.

To avoid the sensitivities brought about by your makeup, use oil-free foundations and non-comedogenic water-based goods and always make sure to wash off your makeup before having a good night’s sleep. This way, the chance of blocking your pores and worsening inflammation is reduced.

Myth #10. Acne is not inherited

Research findings show that even if no specific gene is linked to inheriting acne problems, there are hereditary possibilities to produce excessive dead skin cells, overproduction of sebum, or even influence the inflammatory response of your skin is directly linked.

Aside from these, a genetic tendency of androgen hormone over-secretion might also cause skin sensitivity which leads to acne breakout. While it is 80% true that acne development is genetically related, bear in mind that acne breakouts can be prevented and treated. Your lifestyle can also help you in controlling breakouts. Proper hydration, maintaining a high-fiber diet, enough rest, and avoiding factors that trigger inflammation development will help keep acne at bay.

Acne treatment from Greg Keily Chemist

For more help, patients can try non-prescription drugs as an initial home remedy.
